Speaker Mike Johnson Seeks to Deliver Aid to Ukraine
Putting Foreign Aid Bills on the Floor
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced on Wednesday that he intends to keep to his plan of introducing a number of foreign aid bills on the floor, including funding for Ukraine.
Supporting Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific
Johnson's aid package includes funding for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region. The largest bill in the package, totaling $608 billion, is dedicated to military funding for Ukraine.
Johnson emphasized the importance of standing with Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
"We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering and devastation that Russia has inflicted on Ukraine," Johnson said. "We must do everything we can to help the Ukrainian people defend their freedom and sovereignty."
Risking Job to Support Ukraine
Johnson's decision to prioritize aid to Ukraine has garnered both praise and criticism. Some have questioned whether it is appropriate to send such a large amount of funding overseas while the United States faces its own challenges.
However, Johnson maintained that supporting Ukraine is the right thing to do.
"I believe that we are on the right side of history," Johnson said. "We cannot stand idly by while innocent people are being killed and displaced."
Vote Expected Soon
Johnson's foreign aid package is expected to come to a vote in the House in the coming days. If passed, it will then move to the Senate for further consideration.
